Two Charged in O'Hare Home Invasion
Both were charged with felonies, only Hemphill appeared in Bond Court on Thursday
Tabitha Hemphill and Mansfield Wallace were both charged with Home Invasion Causing Bodily Harm and were scheduled to appear in Bond Court this afternoon.
Tabitha Hemphill appeared in bond court and had two warrants, one out of Skokie and one out of Dupage County.
Mansfield Wallace, the male charged in this incident, will be held no bail on a parole hold but did not physically appear in Bond Court. Wallace is incapacitated and is still currently in the hospital in good condition as he was shot in this incident.
According to Cook County prosecutors, the 80 year old victim did not know either and was recovering from prostate surgery. The victim was home when heard a knock at the door and answered the door thinking it was his neighbor who had been periodically checking on him. That's when Wallace is said to have burst into the apartment and engaged in a physical struggle. The victim then got his gun and fired a shot in the direction of Wallace and Hemphill and grazed Hemphill. The fight continued, a struggle over the gun ensued and the gun discharged, striking Wallace in the chest.
The offenders are alleged to have taken money and a watch from the victim.
Wallace is said to have then fled and was transported to the hospital by Hemphill.
Hemphill then tried entering the hospital at multiple points, including a door that was under construction, apparently attempting to avoid detection and was unable to initially gain entry. She eventually made it in and received treatment for the graze wound. Police were called and arrived at the hospital. As she was being treated, Hemphill swallowed a bag with suspected heroin. Hemphill was then found with a car key belonging to the car they alleged to have fled the home invasion, a bag with suspected heroin and money were all found in her vaginal cavity. Police then found that the vehicle, a Honda Pilot was reported stolen and they then found victim's gun was found in the same car.
The victim was unable to identify the offenders in a photo array.
Hemphill has a pending stolen vehicle case and a pending drug case.
The victim suffered bruising, bloody ear and had to get stitches.
Prosecutors says Hemphill has been placed on probation three times and has completed those probation sentences unsatisfactorily each time and has 3 bond forfeitures.
Public defenders representing Hemphill say she is 31, currently not working, has 3 children and is a lifelong resident of Chicago.
Public defender stated in mitigation that she was "merely viewed in the home" and it's not clear if she took anything.
Wallace has thirteen felony convictions, four retail thefts for which he was sentenced to 40 months, four years for a burglary, four years for a stolen car case and is currently on parole and has an extensive history dating back to at least the early 2000’s. Prosecutors said he also has 4 bond forfeitures.
Prosecutors filed petitions for no bond for both Wallace and Hemphill. However, Wallace cannot be held on no bond as he was not physically present in court and Illinois prohibits it.
Bond was set at a $500,000 d-bond for Wallace while Hemphill was held no bond.
