Pregnant Woman Killed While Committing Armed Robbery in Belmont-Cragin
A 21 year old woman was shot as she committed an armed robbery on the 5200 block of W Montana
A woman was shot and killed during an exchange of gunfire on the 5200 block of W Montana in the Belmont-Cragin neighborhood this afternoon.
Police responded to a call of a person shot at approximately 1:00 P.M. early Monday afternoon. A caller described the initial shooter as a Black male with curly hair wearing a lime green hoodie and blue jeans who fled northbound after the shots were fired and possibly fled in a white Jeep.
When police arrived they found a woman, now identified as 21-year-old Genesis Escobar, lying on the ground in extremely critical condition. Police found three gunshot wounds on her body, on her hand, back and shoulder. Family on scene told police she is five months pregnant. Escobar was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital where she was later pronounced deceased at approximately 1:43 P.M. Police found money and one shell casing at the scene.
Chicago Police later released a statement regarding the shooting: “In the 5200 block of W. Montana, on March 6, 2023, at approx. 1:00 p.m., a female victim, 21, was inside a vehicle when she was struck to the shoulder, back, and hand by gunfire. The victim was transported to Illinois Masonic Hospital where she was pronounced. There are no offenders in custody, area detectives are investigating.”
Police later updated the investigation to reveal that Escobar was actually shot during the course of an armed robbery where there was an exchange of gunfire between people: “The 21 year old female entered a vehicle and announced a robbery. During the incident there was an exchange of gunfire between an unknown offender outside of the vehicle and the subjects inside of the vehicle where the 21 year old female, was seated. The 21 year old female sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder, back and hand and was later pronounced on scene. No offenders in custody area five detectives are investigating.”
Escobar was known to police. There is no one in custody and police continue to investigate. Citizens are advised to call Area Five Detectives at 312-746-6614 with any information regarding the shooting.
