Two men were charged during a homicide in Albany Park, none of the the men are charged with murder
Two men were charged after a woman was found dead in an Albany Park apartment on the 4500 block of N Albany on Sunday June 25 around midnight.
As previously reported here, police responded to a call of a woman shot on the 4500 block of N Albany. When police arrived, they found a woman shot in the head and two men in the apartment attempting to render aid by performing CPR. The woman was transported to the hospital where she was eventually pronounced. The woman was identified by the Medical Examiner’s Office as 47 year old Adelina Ocampo.
Police recovered two firearms and took two suspects into custody. The two suspects taken into custody were identified as 25 year old Luis Garcia and 35 year old Aurelio Novas. Neither suspect was charged with murder after Chicago Police sought charges. Per Chicago Police, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office denied murder charges for either man. Luis Garcia was charged with one misdemeanor count of Domestic Battery/Physical Contact while Aurelio Novas was charged with one misdemeanor count of Firearm without a Valid FOID.
Garcia was taken to bond court and his case was heard in domestic bond court. There are no details regarding his bond hearing. However, Novas was present in front of Judge Kelly McCarthy in misdemeanor bond court where the details of what police saw were disclosed.
Cook County prosecutors described a scene where police arrived to a call of a person shot and saw Novas rendering aid to the victim. Police also saw a silver revolver next to Novas and a black handgun on a TV stand. Police then discovered that there had been a physical altercation between Novas and Garcia and a third person was allegedly present. During the altercation, the handgun was given to the third person who attempted to intervene and it was then that the gun discharged striking the woman in the head.
Police were able to determine that Novas' firearm did not fire during this incident. However, Novas does not posses a valid Firearm Owners Identification Card nor an Illinois Concealed Carry License.
There is no word on Garcia's background, though per CPD records it appears he does not have a criminal background while Novas has two prior misdemeanors, one obstruction of identification case from 2012 and a 2017 DUI case.
Novas was given a $2,000 d-bond, meaning he needs $200 to be released.
